India’s Manufacturing Sector Reviving: CII Survey

(RTTNews) - A survey of the Confederation of Indian Industry m-ASCON says the Indian manufacturing sector shows signs of revival and is growing more in the first half of the fiscal compared with the same period a year ago.

It indicated that almost all the sectors grew during the first half, showing an improvement on the year-ago figures, and showed significant changes compared to the April 2008-March 2009 period. This indicated a change in growth to the high-and-excellent category from that of negative-and-moderate group for 12% of the sectors.

“This improvement in manufacturing growth has been a result of the stimulus packages announced by the government,” said Chandrajit Banerji, CII director-general.

The robust growth in manufacturing growth in the first half resulted in the higher production of basic goods, intermediate goods and consumer durables. About 10% of the sectors surveyed reported an excellent growth of above 20% in the first half compared to the year-ago period. High growth was witnessed in the production of pumps, light commercial vehicles, cars, scooters and other consumer durables, including electronics and home appliances.

However, the survey expressed concern over the figures of exports, as 20 of the 29 sectors reported a fall in the first half of the fiscal. With the exception of soda ash, machine tools, cars, multi-purpose vehicles and biscuits, other sectors reported either negative or moderate rates of growth.
