Number Of Canadians Collecting EI Benefit Falls

(RTTNews) - The number of Canadian receiving regular Employment Insurance benefits in August fell 2.4% from July, the second consecutive monthly decline, official data showed Tuesday.

Statistics Canada noted that the declines in nearly all provinces contributed to the overall decrease of 19,000, with the most notable percentage declines in Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

EI statistics indicate the number of people who received EI benefits, and should not be confused with information on the total number of unemployed people.

Compared with August 2008, the number of people receiving regular EI benefits was higher in all census metropolitan areas, particularly Calgary and Edmonton.
