Sensex (^BSESN) down 268.14 points on Monday (October 5, 2009)
Sensex fell 268.14 points or 1.6% to 16866.41
Nifty (^NSEI) fell 80.20 points or 1.6% to 5003.20.
Mid Cap index fell 1.7%. Small Cap fell 2.1%.
BSE 500 was down 1.6%. Sensex losers: 23
Of 13 BSE Sectoral indices, 12 posted losses.
Advancers: 779, Decliners: 1991, Unchanged: 82

Sensex gainers were: ITC +2.7%, Sun Pharma +2.2%, Reliance Infra +1.5%, HUL +0.6%, Mahindra & Mahindra +0.6%, Hero Honda +0.3% and Wipro +0.02%.
Sensex losers included Bharti Airtel -8.1%, Grasim -7.1%, Hindalco -6.8%, Reliance Comm -5.6%, DLF -4%, Sterlite Ind -3.6% and State Bank -3.5%.
Realty index fell 3.5% led by Orbit Corp -5%, Parsvnath -5%, Unitech -4.9%, Ansal Properties -4.2%, DLF -4% and Anant Raj Ind -3.4%.
Teck index tanked 2.7% helped by Bharti Airtel -8.1%, Balaji Telefilm -5.8%, Tata Tele -5.7%, Rel Comm -5.6% and HT Media -5.3%.
Metal index dropped 2.5% supported by Hindalco -6.8%, Jindal Saw -5.7%, Ispat Ind -4.5%, SAIL -4.1%, Guj NRE -3.9% and Sterlite Ind -3.6%.
Bankex slipped 2% aided by Federal Bank -4.7%, Yes Bank -4.1%, Axis Bank -3.9%, State Bank -3.5%, Kotak Bank -3.2% and Bank of Baroda -2.6%.
Auto index declined 1.8% facilitated by Escorts -6.6%, Bharat Forge -4.8%, Exide Ind -4.4%, Apollo Tyres -3.6% and Tata Motors -3.3%.
Other sectoral losers were: PSU -1.5%, Oil & Gas -1.2%, Power -1%, IT -0.8%, Capital Goods -0.8%, Consumer Durables -0.6% and Healthcare -0.4%.
FMCG was the only sector, which climbed 1.5% led by ITC +2.6%, Nestle +2.3%, Colgate +1.1%, HUL +0.6%, Marico +0.2% and Dabur India +0.03%.
Volume shockers on BSE:
Ispat Ind 5.68 million shares, Unitech 9.3 mln shares and Suzlon Energy 8.69 mln shares
Turnover:
Total traded turnover was at Rs 79,766.65 crore. This included Rs 18,318.23 crore from the NSE cash segment, Rs 56,090.77 crore from the NSE F&O and the balance Rs 5,357.65 crore from the BSE cash segment.
Buzzers:
Suashish Diamond +20% at Rs 252.10, Alchemist +20% at Rs 126.15, Elnet Tech +20% at Rs 47.80, Novopan +19.6% at Rs 35.35, Cheviot Company +19.6% at Rs 221.25, Minda Ind +19.4% at Rs 231.05 and Bambino Agro +18.5% at Rs 38.80.
Heavy Losers:
Astavinayak -18.4% at Rs 67.9, Asian Star -11.6% at Rs 1590, ABC India -11.1% at Rs 45.95, Basant Agro -10% at Rs 42.25, Omkar Overseas -10% at Rs 93.45, Artefact -10% at Rs 84.20 and Mysore Petro -9.8% at Rs 29.
Bharti Airtel tanks 8.1 pct:
Bharti-MTN deal was called off last week post disapproval by the South African government. The shared fell 8.1% to Rs 400.30 after the news that it may have spent $5 billion on MTN bid.
Among the other telecom shares, Tata Teleservices and Reliance Communication fell 5.6% each. Idea Cellular, MTNL and Tata Communication declined 3.4-4.4%.
Grasim falls 7.1 pct:
Grasim Industries was another major loser among the largecaps, down over 7.1% to Rs 2509.10 post the news of cement business demerger. The company pproved demerger of cement business into arm Samruddhi; wherein shareholders will get one share of Samruddhi for every one held. Grasim’s stake in Samruddhi will be reduced to 65%.
Parsvnath Developers falls 5 pct:
Parsvnath Developers fell 4.95 percent to Rs 140.25 after the real estate firm said it would issue shares through a qualified institutional placement at 121.25 rupees a share to raise 1.68 billion rupees.
Midcap Movers:
Jet Airways shot up 12.9% and Kingfisher Airlines up 4.2%. SpiceJet was up just 0.3%. Among other midcap stocks, Koutons Retail rose 13.7%. Coromandel Fertiliser and Bajaj Finserv went up 3.5% each.
Midcap Losers:
However, Asian Star fell 11.55%. KEC International, HMT and Jindal Saw lost 5.5-6%.
Smallcap Movers:
Suashish Diamon locked at 20% upper circuit. Bhagyanagar Industries, UB Holdings, aurionPro Solutions and Adhunik Metalik gained 9-12.5%.
Smallcap Losers:
Ashtavinayak tanked 18.39%. Money Matters, Paper Products, Andrew Yule and Geodesic fell 7-9%.
Asian Markets:
In Asia, Kospi was down 2.3%, Straits Times down 0.8% and Nikkei down 0.6% while Taiwan Weighted rose 0.35% and Hang Seng up 0.26%. Shanghai is shut till October 8.
European Markets:
European markets were quoting: FTSE 100 was +0.5 %. The CAC 40: +0.3% and the DAX was +0.2%.
Crude:
Crude was quoting at $69.26 per barrel.
