India’s April-June Sensitive Items Import Rises
(RTTNews) - During April-June 09, India’s total import of sensitive items rose 41% to Rs.13,509 crore from Rs.9,608 crore in the corresponding period of last year. The gross import of all commodities during same period of current year totaled Rs.248,171 crore, compared with Rs.334,191 crore during the same period of last year. Thus import of sensitive items constitutes 5.4% and 2.9% of the gross imports during the current year and last year respectively, say data released Tuesday by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Imports of automobiles, products of SSI and alcoholic beverages declined at broad group level during the period. However, imports of all other items, namely edible oil, fruits and vegetables (including nuts), cotton and silk, rubber, spices, marble and granite, milk and milk products, tea and coffee, as also food grains, increased during the period under reference.
In the edible oil segment, the import grew to Rs.5,546.53 crore from Rs.2,572.24 crore last year for the corresponding period of this year, mainly due to substantial increase in import of crude palm oil and its fractions. The imports of both crude edible oil and refined oil rose 108% and 168% respectively.
Imports of sensitive items from Indonesia, China P RP, Myanmar, the US, Malaysia, Ukraine, Japan, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Benin, Cote D’ Ivoire, Australia etc. rose, while those from Korea RP, Germany, Thailand etc. declined, the ministry added.
