How Recent Market Activity Compares With The 4 Worst Bear Markets

It just dawned on me that we just had a week of positive gains in the stock market!
This is a very strange feeling, and I may be able to open up my 401k and IRA statements when they are mailed out later this month. Or that could still be a bad idea…..
People always want to know how to gauge the current market downturn with those that have happened in the past.
Here are some statistics and charts that keep many 401k and IRA owners with their heads in the stand. Yet, a powerful example of just how bad these markets truly are.
The 4 worst Bear Markets in the past 100 years
This graph is a fantastic representation of the 4 worst Bear Markets in the past 100 years. The unnerving thing is that this is the 2nd worst, and currently is dead even with the 1930’s as the dubious honor of “The Big One”.
We just went back in time 12 years with regard to the Markets
It is never a good feeling when over a decade worth of gains are tossed out over the course of 6 months. These Bear Market Graphs are yet another illustration of how frustrating the past 12 years have been. I am hopeful that the Economy rights itself, because if we continue the path of the 1930’s, I definitely will not be opening my 401k or IRA statements in the near future!
