Stock Winners And Losers Of The Last Decade

By Matthew McCall on February 25, 2009 | More Posts By Matthew McCall | Author's Website

If you bought the S&P 500 exactly 10 years ago today you would be down 41%. During that same time there have been some big losers, but also a large number of winners that could have changed your portfolio forever. Here is a list of the best and the worst of the last 10 years.

SYNOPSIS: The biggest losers in the three indices are large-cap names that investors thought could never “fail” and would be around forever. Now companies such as General Motors (-98%) and Citigroup (-92%) are on the brink of extinction. On the flipside there the winners are from sectors that fit into long-term MegaTrends that were strong during the last decade: Rise in Oil (XOM, CVX, XTO, etc.), Biotech (CELG, GILD), Wireless (RIMM). Looking at the next decade I feel there will be a large number of opportunities for investors that are willing to take advantage of the once in a lifetime situation. You must be able to withstand volatility along the way and realize not all the investments will work, but patience combined with outside the box thinking can make you very wealthy by the end of the next decade. In my next book due to hit the shelves just before the holiday season later this year I discuss my major themes for making money in this opportunity of a lifetime. For example, one area is Water! Yep, the liquid we pay $2 a bottle for!!
