UK Claimant Count Rises in September, Matches Expectations

(RTTNews) - Wednesday, the Office for National Statistics or ONS said the UK claimant count rate was 2.9% of the workforce in September, up from 2.8% in the previous month. The rate matched economists’ expectations.

The number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance benefit increased 31,800 to 939,900 in September. However, increase in the claimant count was less than the 36,000 rise estimated by economists.

Further, the jobless rate was 5.7% in the three months to August, up 0.5 percentage points from the previous three months. The unemployment level came in at 1.79 million during three months to August.

Average earnings excluding bonuses showed an annual growth of 3.6% in three months to August, down 0.1 percentage point from the three months to July. Meanwhile, annual growth in earnings including bonuses slowed to 3.4%.
