Greek retail sales volume declines in July

(RTTNews) - Greek retail sales volume at constant prices decreased 2% year-on-year in July, in contrast to the 0.7% growth in June. This was the first annual decline in retail sales since March. In February, retail sales volume had fallen 4.1%.

The drop in retail sales reflected a 3.4% fall in retail sales in food and 0.8% decline in sales in the non-food sector.

The steepest decline of 7.2% in retail sales volume was recorded in sale of food beverages and tobacco. On the other hand, the fastest retail sales growth of 5.2% was logged in sales of pharmaceutical and cosmetics goods.

Meanwhile, the retail sales turnover at current prices rose 1.6% year-on-year in July compared with a 4.6% increase in the previous month. Turnover in the food sector grew 0.9%, while it was up 1.9% for the non-food sector.

Among the different categories, retail sales turnover of food beverages and tobacco fell 3%, while it slipped 2.6% for retail sales not in stores. Meanwhile, the retail sales turnover grew 7.4% for pharmaceutical and cosmetics, followed by 6.1% for department stores.
