Iceland’s Tourist Overnight Stays Decline In May

(RTTNews) – Iceland’s hotel industry recorded 105,100 overnight stays in May, down from 117,000 last year, the Statistics Iceland said Tuesday. However, compared to previous month, overnight stays have increased considerably.

Total overnight stays dropped 10% year-on-year in May. In April, overnight stays totaled 85,694. Overnight stays by foreigners fell 8% annually and hotel stay by Icelandic tourists decreased 21%. For the first five months of 2010, the number of overnight stays was 416,600, posting 1% decrease annually.

During the period, the number of overnight stays by foreigners remained unchanged from last year, while overnight stays by Icelanders recorded a 5% decrease. Iceland’s economy had reported a 0.6% growth sequentially in the first quarter, following a 0.7% expansion in the final three months of 2009.
