I’m a big fan of travel rewards cards as I love traveling – but only those with great flexibility and don’t charge an annual fee. Many travel rewards credit cards in the US come with an annual fee and can be quite inflexible, but not this travel rewards card which I’m going to review now – Blue Sky from American Express. This credit card is one of a kind, with points that are worth 33% more than points on most other travel rewards cards.
Here I’ll do a detailed review of the American Express Blue Sky credit card, one of the more popular travel rewards credit card offers in the US, and tell you how we rate this card.
Things We Like About This Card
No annual fee. Some travel rewards credit cards charge an annual fee, but this card, Blue Sky from American Express, is one of the few cards that offer you travel privileges without you having to fork out any annual fee.
Receive 7,500 bonus points when spending $1,000 in the first 3 months. Once you make purchases worth $1,000 during the first 3 months you will earn 7,500 bonus points, in addition to the points you earn when making your purchases. These 7,500 points are worth a $100 statement credit.
0% introductory APR for purchases and balance transfers for up to 15 months. After the introductory period, the regular variable APR for purchases is 17.24%, 20.24% or 22.24% depending on your credit score.
Earn points on everything you buy. You get 1 point for every $1 you spend on virtually every purchase, so no dollar goes unrewarded.
For every 7,500 points you earn, you get a $100 statement credit which can be used against any travel purchases, including air tickets, hotel stays, car rental, cruises from any travel agencies, tour operators, and online travel sites. Note that points can only be redeemed in increments of 7,500. Other travel credit cards also give you 1 point for every $1, but usually let you redeem 10,000 points for $100 credit, whereas Blue Sky lets you redeem just 7,500 points for a $100 statement credit! That means your points are worth 33% more than points on most other travel rewards cards! We like.
Earn unlimited amount of points, and points don’t expire as long as the card is active and in good standing. This allows you to accumulate as many points as you want so that you can redeem them on any occasion you wish.
You can book your own travel and still earn the same amount of rewards. This means that you don’t have to book your travel tickets with certain travel agents, instead you can look around for the best deals and buy the tickets that appeal the most to you, purchasing them anywhere you want, without restricting you to buy from a specific website. This advantage of shopping around for your own travel tickets let you find the best available deals and allows you to book the tickets for any date.
Travel accident insurance. When you pay for your travel tickets (including your family) with your card, you will be covered with up to $100,000 in travel accident insurance within and outside the US.
Free car rental loss and damage insurance. When you charge your car rental to your card, you will be covered automatically at no additional charge.
Extended Warranty on eligible items you buy, with up to 1 more year of free warranty on eligible purchases made in the US. This means that if the warranty of the item you bought expires and the product you purchased breaks or has any problems, American Express will fix or replace the product for you as long as the original warranty was of 5 years or less.
Return Protection and Purchase Protection. Got a change of mind after making a purchase? No worries. Return protection allows you to return items that the store does not allow you to return. American Express will refund up to $300 per eligible item, until up to 90 days after the purchase was made. With the purchase protection you are offered with this card, you will be paid up to $1,000 per item that you purchased that was damaged, lost or stolen within the first ninety days. This is a protection that is worth having!
Our Least Favorite Things About This Card
You must have at least 7,500 points in order to redeem them, meaning that you would have to wait till you have 7,500 points before you can redeem for a statement credit of $100 against your travel purchases.
You can only redeem your points as a statement credit, not as cash, merchandise, gift cards or other rewards. This means you will only make full use of the card if you ultimately make a travel-related purchase.
Blue Sky from American Express is specially designed for those who love traveling or who travel frequently and would like to earn points on virtually all purchases which can be redeemed as a statement credit towards travel purchases. We like that your points earned on this card are worth 33% more than those earned on many other travel cards as you can get a $100 credit towards any travel purchases for every 7,500 points earned, and you can get all the benefits of being an American Express cardmember without having to pay any annual fee. You can purchase air tickets, hotel stays, cruises, car rentals, and more from any travel agencies or any online travel sites, and use your statement credit for that.
Remember that you can only redeem your points as a statement credit against your travel purchases, and you can’t redeem them for cash, merchandise, gift cards or other rewards. All in all, I think Blue Sky from American Express is a very competitive travel rewards card.
