For Young Adults, Health Insurance Is Available For About Same Monthly Cost As A Cell Phone
We always hear how medical insurance is expensive and unaffordable, and that’s why there are 50 million uninsured Americans (here). At least in Michigan for young adults between the ages of 18 and 30, insurance is available for at little at $49.30 per month through Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Michigan, for its Young Adult Blue program (details here), which is about the same monthly cost as a cell phone.

It really strikes a nerve with me when I hear young healthy adults with decent incomes say they can’t afford health insurance then complain when they get injured and face huge hospital bills.
I am a young adult with a chronic illness. In my state that basically means I will not be insured at any premium for health insurance except by an employer.
I would much rather (and have) paid cash to survive and take care of my illness my illness and move back in with my mother than be on government healthcare (which I was when I was laid off and had exhausted my savings). People have no idea how restrictive government programs are in terms of treatment options, and complicated (unless you hold a dual JD/MD) in terms of coverage rules. You think private insurance is bad with their red tape? You ain’t seen nothing yet kiddo.
Add in the fact that those of us who have stuggled to find a job with a decent coverage plan will be penalized and required to subsidize those who chose not to insure themselves yet can afford to, and the whole argument for the government plans to yet to be enacted seems more sinister…..
For people to complain about 40-90 bucks month that easily pays for itself with a z-pack perscription and a few doctor’s visits a year is insanity from my perspective, but it should remain their choice and THEIR obligation to pay if needing medical help.
Maybe, I have more to lose by increased govenrment intervention in medicine.
But, I do not think most citizens realize how much Freedom will be lost or how much further down the road to serfdom more government intervention in healthcare will take us either.
A thousand dollar annual deductable, and you have the audacity to brag?? Get a grip!!
