This scenario sounds so familiar to us in Australia with the exception that we do have a great health care system. My great aunt, the last living relative from my parents’ generation, recently spent two months in hospital with multiple life threatening crises. She is 94 years of age. She received the very best of care with five teams of doctors and surgeons in attendance for ten weeks. As an Aged Pensioner she didn’t pay a cent. The lack of concern about hospital and medico fees, I believe, helped her back to health and she is now happily domiciled in a high level care nursing home. This facility will take all of her savings to fund for however many years she has left, but her quality of life and peace of mind is in tact.
