We watch railcar loadings carefully. Not only because they give the first signal of economic strength or weakness, but also because Warren Buffet watches railcar loadings. If it is good enough for the Oracle of Omaha, it is good enough for us.
The most recent weekly railcar loadings reports indicate that baseline traffic is beginning to decline. Additionally, intermodal traffic (the lifeblood of inventory restocking) has also begun to decline.
Moreover, loadings of the essential ingredients for construction, crushed stone and lumber, have also seen a decline.
