The Citi ThankYou Premier Card, issued by Citi (NYSE:C), is, in my opinion, one of the best travel rewards credit cards to get if you like to travel, be rewarded for everyday spending, and get a complimentary domestic air ticket every year when tickets are purchased. The Citi ThankYou Premier Card now has a time-limited promotion whereby you will receive 30,000 bonus points ($300 in gift cards) when you spend $2,000 during the first 3 months.
To help you make a more informed decision, I will do a detailed review of the Citi ThankYou Premier Card, one of Citi’s best credit cards for travel rewards, and tell you how we rate this rewards credit card.
Things We Like About This Card
Earn 30,000 points after spending $2,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of being a cardmember. You can redeem these 30,000 ThankYou points for a $300 gift card or other rewards under the ThankYou network.
Earn 1.2 points per $1 spent on your card at supermarkets, gas stations, drugstores and commuter transportation/parking merchants. This is 20% more than what many other credit cards offer in points per dollar spent on purchases. Remember that this doesn’t apply to online purchases or purchases made in warehouse clubs, convenience stores, department stores or discount stores.
Earn 1 point for every $1 you spend on other purchases. This allows you to earn 1 point per dollar spent, along with all the bonus points and benefits this card has.
Earn 1 Flight Point for every mile you fly when purchasing your airline ticket with your Citi Thank You Premier Card. That means you will earn Flight Points based on the number of miles flown between the city of origin and the city of destination. Note that you will only see these Flight Points on your statement roughly six to eight weeks after the initial date of departure on your airline ticket.
Redeem points for an amazing variety of rewards such as cash, gift cards, flights, hotels, travel packages, merchandise, statement credit, music and many others through Citi’s ThankYou network. For example, just 1,500 points can be redeemed for a $10 gift card from Bed, Bath and Beyond. If you prefer cash, 8,000 points can be redeemed for a $50 cash reward.
Earn unlimited points and there’s no expiration of points. There’s no cap on how many points you can earn, so the more you spend, the more points you’ll earn and you never have to worry about your points expiring!
Complimentary domestic companion air ticket every year when you book air tickets through Citi’s travel benefits provider, Spirit Incentives. You’ll have to pay for all fees, taxes and charges associated with the companion ticket though.
15% discount on all air travel when you book through Citi’s travel benefits provider, Spirit Incentives. Make sure to pay with your Citi Thank You Premier Card.
No foreign transaction fee on purchases. This special benefit allows you to travel anywhere in the world and use your card freely without having to worry about being charged a fee when making purchases in another currency. This is a feature not found in the Citi ThankYou Preferred Card (read our Citi ThankYou Preferred Card review).
You earn 200 points for enrolling in paperless statements and 200 points for signing-up for Account Online. This applies if it is the first time that you are enrolling in these programs. If you sign up for both, you would earn 400 points.
Earn extra points when you shop online through the ThankYou Bonus Center which has more than 600 of your favorite and familiar retailers.
Earn an Anniversary Bonus at the close of each year that you have had the card. This Anniversary Bonus is a percentage of the points you’ve earned from purchases during that year and it varies according to how long you have had this card.
| Years | Anniversary Bonus % |
| 0 – 1 | 1% |
| 1 – 2 | 2% |
| 2 – 3 | 3% |
| 3 – 4 | 4% |
| 4 – and after | 5% |
Retail Purchase Protection. When you make purchases with this card, most of the items are eligible for protection against theft, accidental breakage or fire of up to $1,000 for up to 90 days from the date of purchase. So no more worries if the store refuses to let you do an exchange!
Extended Warranty. For most items purchased on your Citi card, the original manufacturers’ U.S. warranties (of one year or less) may be extended up to one additional year. This saves you some money as you don’t need to purchase an extended warranty from the store.
Price Protection. If you purchase something with your Citi card and then see the item being advertised in print for less within 60 days, you can get a refund for the difference up to $250. This excludes items bought on the Internet and certain items. Now you can shop with more confidence!
Travel accident insurance. When you charge plane, train or bus tickets to your Citi card, you, your spouse and eligible dependent children are automatically covered for Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance free of charge. This insurance includes emergency assistance, medical assistance, and more.
Auto rental insurance. If you rent a car with this Citi card and damage the car in an accident, you don’t have to worry about the cost of repair since this card also includes free auto rental insurance.
$0 liability on unauthorized charges made on your card.
Our Least Favorite Things About This Card
$125 annual fee that is waived the first year. You’ll also have to pay $50 for each authorized user.
No 0% introductory APR on purchases or balance transfers. This card has a variable APR of 13.99% – 22.99%, depending on your credit score. If you pay your bills in full each month, you won’t have to pay any interest.
Our Verdict:

4.5/5 Stars
The Citi ThankYou Premier Card is a travel rewards credit card that rewards cardmembers for their everyday spending and traveling. The main advantage this card has, apart from the many points you earn for each dollar spent and the additional 30,000 bonus points you earn in the first three months after spending $2,000, is that this rewards card has many travel-related benefits such as having no foreign transaction fee, which allows you to travel to other countries without having to pay any fee when using your card, and giving you a complimentary domestic airline ticket every year when you book your travel with Citi’s travel provider Spirit Incentives! Plus you’ll get a 15% discount on any travel that is booked with Spirit Incentives.
The Citi ThankYou Premier Card lets you earn Flight Points when you buy an air ticket with this card, and also rewards you with a special anniversary bonus, which gives you more bonus points the longer you have your card. The Citi ThankYou Premier Card is worth it if you travel often as you will be earning enough points to pay the annual fee plus extra points which you can use to redeem for cash, gift cards, merchandise or other rewards. Remember, the 30,000 bonus points offer will expire soon!
