Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card – Get 40,000 Signing Bonus Points Here!
Review of: Chase Sapphire Preferred
Our Verdict:

4.7/5 Stars
The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, with its new double bonus offer, is, in my opinion, one of the best premium rewards credit cards to get right now. Issued by JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM), this card gives you 40,000 bonus points after spending $3,000 in the first 3 months of account opening. These 40,000 points are twice as many points as the old promotion, and are worth $500 in travel credit – redeemable for two flights, worth up to $250 each. I think this is definitely one of the largest bonus offers I’ve seen so far in the credit card market this year. To qualify for this card, you must have good to excellent credit score.
Here are the main highlights of the new Chase Sapphire Preferred Card
When you sign up for Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, and spend $3,000 within the first 3 months (including purchases to this card), as a time limited offer you will receive 40,000 bonus points, which can be redeemed for two flights worth $250 each if you book it through Chase’s Ultimate Rewards site. What I like about Chase Sapphire is its great flexibility. Other than travel, you can redeem your points for cash back, gift cards, merchandise and many more. Travel can be redeemed through Chase’s Ultimate Rewards site or you can use your card to get your flight or hotel from anywhere else, and get redeem your points as a statement credit. Or you can purchase anything with your card and pay for it with your points. Your points will go 20% further if you book it through Ultimate Rewards though.
Like the Chase Sapphire Card, you will earn 1 point for every $1 you spend on the card, 2 points for every $1 you spend on purchasing air tickets through Chase’s Ultimate Rewards Mall, and up to 10 points for every $1 you spend on shopping in their online mall.
Benefits Only Found In Chase Sapphire Preferred Card
Points are worth 20% more when you buy air tickets or hotel accommodations through Chase’s Ultimate Rewards. You will also earn a 7% Annual Points Dividend on all your earned points each year, even if you have already redeemed those points.
There’s no foreign transaction fee when you use this card on purchases made outside the U.S., so this card will save you on unnecessary fees when you shop in a different currency. You can also choose to transfer your points to major frequent flyer or hotel programs at a 1:1 value.
The annual fee of $95 is waived for the first year, so you get to enjoy the benefits of this card for free for the first year.
I’m wondering if I decide to cancel my approved Chase Preferred Sapphire membership after one year(assuming I leave in good standing) and reapply for a standard Sapphire membership, whether this would adversely affect my chances(assuming nothing in my credit or income history has changed).
@Leonard: The conventional wisdom is that you can, by calling Chase after 11 months, downgrade your Preferred card to a standard Sapphire card with no difficulty (and without paying the annual fee). This is better for your credit score on all counts; the only reason to cancel and apply again would be to get a new signup bonus for the Sapphire card (if one was available), and Chase is notorious for not allowing that.
I missed the 3 month deadline to spend $3,000 and receive 50,000 bonus points. Is it possible have 2 Chase Preferred Credit Cards? I could sign up for a new one and do my best to spend the $3000 in the first 3 months. Or, could I cancel the 1st and sign up for a new card to reinstate the bonus system?
Thank you!
What is the difference between the Chase Preferred Sapphire and a British Airways card? I’ve heard the benefits of using the BA card long-term. How does the Chase card compare?
Is the card also a debit card? If so what is the fee for debit transactions out of the country. My son is traveling to Australia and will need cash.So is the Sapphire one for me?
Credit card only.
I wouldn’t trust this card to hands of young ppl! :)
They have usually high CL approval so big risk to hand it over to your son ;)
This might be a dumb questions, but this card isn’t a Mastercard, VISA, Discover, or AMEX. Is it not possible to buy things online? I’ve never seen an option for Chase Saphire on any website.
Which Sapphire card offers $500 cash back if you spend $3K in 3 months? I’m interested in CASH, not travel.
@Chris
The Sapphire card comes in visa or mastercard but it defaults as a visa card unless you request a mastercard application
Are there any airlines excluded from this program? And can I use this card to pay bills online and still receive points for those bills paid online?
Above you write “When you sign up for Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, and spend $3,000 within the first 3 months (including purchases or balance transfers to this card)” When I click the offer link it says balance transfers don’t count. Do know of instances where they count balance transfers towards the spend requirement?
Don’t bother with the British Airways card. They charge enormous “fuel surcharge” fees that must be paid in cash. Example recently…flight from Chicago to London would cost nearly $700 in fuel fees for coach. Plus all the miles needed for internationsl. Cost to general public? $340 for ticket and then same fuel fees. So you use tons of miles, fight with availability restrictions and you’ve saved less than $350 for an international flight. Big deal. Nothing actually available in reality for US domestic partner airlines. We have nearly 600K miles and can’t make good use of them. That’s why we’re looking at Sapphire Preferred!
Do the airline miles have an expiration? I saw that that the Capital One travel credit card has no expiration. I’m deciding between the two. I travel once a year with family. Which one do you think is better? Thanks!!!
ITS A VISA CARD!
I have the Chase Sapphire PREFERRED Visa Card.
I see that the Chase Sapphire has rental car insurance included when renting with that particular card.
QUESTION: Does the Chase Sapphire PREFERRED Visa Card include the same coverage? Assuming it does, but want to be sure.
Thank you.
i am interested in the sapphire preferred card because i will be traveling to europe this summer. are there any restrictions for air travel and area all flights available to choose just like the flight schedule from the airlines. i do not want to have to take some flight that is going to take me forever to get there. also do you just pay the difference since the flight i am looking at will cost $1300 but I will only get $625 credit for the bonus.
Is it possible to spend the $3000 in the first 3 months and get the 50,000 bonus points and then transfer them (1:1) to an American Airlines frequent flyer program? Or, do the 50,000 bonus points have to be redeemed for two flights worth $312.50 each and booked through Chase’s Ultimate Rewards site?
Thank you!
Jessica, the 50,000 bonus points can be transfered 1:1 to AA — they do NOT have to be used through Ultimate Rewards.
If a flight is booked through Chase’s Ultimate Rewards site, do the 50,000 points have to be redeemed for TWO flights, or can all 50,000 points be used toward ONE flight?
has anyone had any luck in having them wave the fee after one year?
Chase or Capital question …do you these earned miles have blackout times or can be used when you need them….
thanks
Is this card accepted widely across Europe?
Question: Can the points be transferred to the Emirates frequent flyer system (Emirates Skywards) for 1:1 ratio?
Does anyone know if the Chase Sapphire 50K points can be transferred to United Mileage Plus and/or Hilton Honors?
Question:
How long does it take for you to receive the Chase Sapphire Preferred card after an electronic application? I have a travel in 8 days and would like to use it to pay for hotels and something else. Is it possible to get it in time?
I was also told balance transfers don’t count, which is most of the appeal of this card.
It says you receive $1 for every point you spend, however, I’ve read in the fine print elsewhere that it’s only for certain merchandise….what is it really? Also, If you don’t continue with the card after a year do you have to use your bonus points before you cut out?
Thanks!
It’s a Visa Signature.
I am wondering if it is at all possible to get this card if my income is low, like only 15K. I’ve got good credit, 745 and above. Have 12 years credit, house paid off. No car loans. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
This is not correct, AA is not a point transfer partner.
I’ve read online that the minimum income required is $120,000/year. That said, on other card sites people have been approved with less than half that annual income, though one person posted being rejected because Chase told the person that their income is too low. I would guess that 15k is probably not high enough. Maybe try Chase Freedom or regular Chase Sapphire instead?
I was approved with an income of 30k. 120k/yr is not a minimum as i am a living proof of it.
@Jane When you apply you do not necessarily have to specify the exact Annual income. You may exaggerate. You can say 50-60K. You will mostly get approved for the card. You can apply thru dailymarkets website as they are an affiliate with them.
I would suggest calling them to see if they can expedite it at this point.
Just got my Sapphire Preferred in the mail yesterday. Called to activate and a live rep answered within one ring. The rep also stated that Sapphire Preferred members will always get a live rep. So that’s cool. Still trying to link it up with my other chase accounts online, but no luck as of yet. The card itself is heavy, almost like a metal card. I also have a Chase Ink card and am debating closing that account. I owe nothing on it and my Sapphire Preferred is triple the credit limit. Will this have a negative effect on my credit if I close the Chase Ink card, because it would show less available credit?
Mike, the card is heavy like a metal card because it is a metal card, :P.
Is it possibel to pay my bills with the card such as electric, Directv, car payments, mortgage as well as gas, groceries, rx’s?? Need to build up points to get the 40000 bonus would that be possible? Thanks for your articles very insightful. :)
Does this card have the chip thing inserted?
@Mike
You can call Chase and ask them to reallocate your credit limit from your other Chase card to the Sapphire preferred card. That way you do not have to close the other account and possibly take a credit score hit.
