The free first year and the $100 in rewards pretty much pays for the Venture rewards (blue) card for 3 years.

However, if you plan to keep the card long term (> 3 years),the breakeven point between these two cards is actually ~$8000 (NOT $3000 as stated above) in spending per year. If you spend more than $8000, the $59 annual fee is worth it. Otherwise, go with the no fee card.

MATH:

If you spent $8,000 a year on the blue card, you’d have $160 in rewards (minus $59 annual fee = $101 in rewards)

If you spent $8,000 on the yellow card, you’d have $100 in rewards.

I am interested. Can I tie my bank account to this and use this as a foreign ATM card for my bank?

That assumes that you cover the $59 cost with points earned from expenditures.

If you consider the fee as a cost of salary/time: If I earn a hypothetical $8/hour working, in about 1 day I’ve covered the cost differential of the cards, and increased my return on investment for the entire year’s purchases by 75%.

So don’t think of it in terms of $8000. Really, its cost is relative to however you come up with the $59.

You’re correct that the break even is $8,000/year or $667/month which is easy to hit just using the blue card for essentials such as food, gas, utility bills, car insurance, medical bills, clothing, etc. However, the $250 you receive in rewards from the 25,000 bonus miles covers almost 5 additional years on top of the free 1st year. So just keep the blue card for 6 years and you’re ahead no matter what you spend.

Thank you for this information! I’ve been thinking about a card with rewards and one of the Capital One cards maybe the card I need!

I was wondering the same thing and called customer service. The women I spoke to did not have an answer to this question and said the rewards center would know. I waited on hold while she contacted them to find out the answer ( you must be a customer to call the rewards center so I couldn’t contact them myself). When she got back on the phone with me she said the rewards center won’t give her the information, not even an example! You have to be a customer to get that information! (I need that information to now if I even want to become a customer!) So I asked if I could talk to her supervisor and maybe that person would have this information. That was a dead end as well…already disappointed with customer service and not even a customer! I think I will be going with another credit card company.

I have the capital one venture, it gives you 2 miles for every dollar spent. 2,500 miles for a $25 gift card, 5,000 Miles for a $50 gift card, 10,000 miles for $100.. Doesn’t give you any extra for cashing in more miles at a time.

Also great selection of gift cards to choose from, Amazon, Target, Shell gas, Walmart.. those are the only ones I can remember of the top of my head. Also capital one lets you upload pictures as the image on the card.

You must have over 5 year good credit history standing and with at least one credit card over $8000 limit. otherwise you may be declined. I got decliend twice last year.

Today 03/29/2012 I Chat with a Capital One Specilist. He, identified himself as Simon, said even if we spent over $3000 annually the annual fee for the Capital One Venture Rewards Card cannot be waived (I mean after the 1st year). The terms and conditions cannot be changed. Any Idea

Not true. I am 22, and the Venture Rewards Card is my first major credit card. My credit limit is $3,000, which is plenty for me.

I’d be surprised if this was allowed. The way that CC companies pay for these miles is with the transaction fees you earn them every time you use your card (plus interest and fees if you carry interest-accruing balances, but I’m assuming you’re all smarter than that). So if you’ve earned those miles with American, Citi got those fees, not Capital One. There’s no reason for Capital One to credit you for miles you didn’t make money for them with.

Just some food for thought.

I’m holding out for when the sign up bonus gives you 20,000 miles after spending $1,000 in 3 months. This sign up bonus occurred last year but at the time I wasn’t ready for this card. Now I’m ready, but it’s worth it to hold out for the 20,000 miles that’s double what they offer now.
